Square Squire and the Journey to DREAMSTATE

ISBN-978-1-4691-7754-0 - Fiction

Squire Brooks (Square Squire) is a precocious, young black square (“nerd”) whose only awareness of the transitions in his neighborhood of Compton, CA in the early 1960's is the opportunity to chuck stones at the increasing number of For Sale signs in the yards of his white neighbors.  While navigating Compton elementary, junior and high schools during the explosive civil rights period, young Squire is also dealing with the peer driven lessons of everyday adolescent life such as puberty, girls, bullies, and girls.  A dreamer and short story writer extraordinaire at an early age, Squire has developed his own rudimentary imaginative escape mechanism that frees his mind during adolescent life and allows him to escape to a “dream state” whenever he has a writing assignment.  After graduating high school, he and his trusted companion Julius (dog) meet and learn from the foxy Octavia Steves; that his dream state is actually a form of “astral projection;” and that he could be special and destined to become “the” great writer of his time.

Some of my closer friends may recognize bits and pieces of themselves, proving the old writer’s adage “you write what you know.”   I must also fall on my sword and admit to other writers’ maxims such as “writer’s prerogative” and the “licenses” – artistic, dramatic, and poetic- because in striving to truthfully explain a young man growing up through the civil rights area, puberty, and a changing city, I use the exact language (some profane) I remember from the street corners, the schoolyards, and the sweaty gyms.  I just had to be true to my instincts!

The Baby Boomers First-Hand, First-Year Guide to Retirement- 365 Days of Bliss(???!!!) or Diss (not???!!!)

ISBN-978-1-4990-3261-1 -Nonfiction

In order to fully understand "The Baby Boomers First-Hand " - YOU MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR WHEN READING THIS GUIDE- LIFE IS FUNNY AND UNPREDICTABLE.   This self-help, 365 day book/journal will be a source of reference for those of you thinking about retiring, or recently retired.  As an example, let me give you a quick flashback that came to mind when I first thought about retiring after 35 years of formal work:

"So you work…and you work………and time passes.  It’s your turn.  When you are on that dais, and folks are talking about you……….you remember parts of your early work life….. like (flashback) at the first year of your work life, you are walking through a hallway at work one day with your newfound work buddy and you pass an older co-worker….. and when you get out of earshot, you say:

“Can you believe that old fart is still working?”

You laugh and slap five with your buddy as you head out to lunch. Then…it seems like with just the snap of a finger….25-30 years later, you are walking that same hall – alone- and some young co-workers (who you trained by the way) pass you and as they think you are out of earshot you hear the last refrain of:

“…….can you believe that old fart is still working?”

As they slap five and head to lunch. Yes my friend- you have indeed become the old fart in the office ! Now it is time for you to retire. That’s how fast life happens."

To change-up and keep the reader interested, the book is broken up into chapters by each month.  At the end of each chapter is a “Retire-Recap” of what was most exposed/ learned that month, as well as a “Music Jams of the Month” of the author’s favorite walking/writing songs; and finally a “Journal Your Journey” section for the reader to jot down any notes/comments/ideas for that particular month.  The last page reveals the tally for the first 12 months of retirement – and rates the year for either a “bliss ” or “diss."
